When Everything Depends on You

Some habits become part of our days so quietly, we don't notice how much they're asking us to carry.

A quiet workspace with a desk, chair, and daylight, where a business owner steps back from constant questions

Have you ever answered the same question more than once in a single week? Maybe it was where to find a document. Maybe someone needed your approval before moving forward. Maybe a customer wanted reassurance, and you were the person everyone trusted to provide it.

On their own, those moments don't seem particularly important. In fact, they often feel like some of the most meaningful parts of your day. You get to help someone. You remove uncertainty. You make things a little easier for the people around you. There's something deeply satisfying about that. It's one of the reasons so many people choose to build a business in the first place.

You care. You want your customers to have a wonderful experience. You want your team to feel supported. You want things to go well. There's nothing wrong with any of that. In fact, we'd say those instincts are worth protecting. But every now and then, it's worth slowing down long enough to notice what those moments might be quietly teaching us.

Sometimes, without anyone intending it to happen, people begin learning where every answer lives. Not because they're unwilling to find it themselves. Not because they aren't capable. Simply because you've always been generous with your time. You've always been willing to help. Over time, that generosity can become part of the way the business naturally operates.

01 / How it takes shape

A question comes up. Someone asks you. Another decision needs to be made. It finds its way to your desk. A customer has a concern. They'd feel better hearing from you. None of those moments feel especially significant. But together, they begin shaping your days in ways that are easy to miss.

You spend more time responding than reflecting. More time answering than creating. More time helping everyone else move forward than asking where the business itself is trying to go next.

If you've found yourself in a season like that, we hope you'll hear this with kindness. It doesn't mean you've built your business the wrong way. It doesn't mean you've held on too tightly.

More often than not, it simply means your business has reached a point where it's ready for knowledge to become something that's shared instead of carried.

02 / When answers are shared

There's a beautiful shift that begins happening when that starts to take place. The questions don't disappear. They simply begin finding answers in more places than one. Someone feels confident making a decision because they understand the expectation. A process is followed because it was written down. A customer receives the same thoughtful experience, even when you're in another meeting. None of that happens because you become less important. It happens because the people around you begin carrying your vision alongside you.

Perhaps that's what healthy leadership slowly grows into. Not becoming the answer to everything. Creating an environment where other people feel confident enough to find the answers too.

Until next time,
